My Name is Mike Kelly and I am the President of Chicago Diamonds, Inc. I would like to tell you a little bit about my company. I started out in the Jewelry Business in 1985. At the time I was a Plumber so believe me I know about hard work. This business is hard work too. You may put in long hours or have to travel and do outside sales.
I started out just dealing with gold and doing it on a part time basis because I could not afford to quit my day job. After a couple of years went buy and I saw some good profits starting to come in, I Decided to quit my day job and go into the jewelry business full time. It was very hard for me, being a middle class young guy who got dirty for a living, to break into the jewelry business. No one wanted to help. I would work all day and then go to the Jewelry Center Building in Chicago in the afternoon to do my buying. Then later in the evening, I would deliver the goods and make sales calls.
The gold dealers only saw me as chump change and the Diamond Dealers wouldn't even look my way. One Day while on the elevator A younger Diamond Dealer spoke to me. He said, "Hey, I see you here all the time. Here's my card, call me if you ever want to get into Diamonds." I said thank you and took the card. I did not call him right away. I was kind of intimidated, But Diamonds are where the real money is. So one day I sucked up my pride and went to see him. He did sell Diamonds to me but I would later realize that the prices were slightly higher than they should have been. I was just grateful that anyone would sell to me. I really owe all of my success in this industry to that one man for giving me my start.
After buying from this guy faithfully for about a year or so, I went to another dealer to try to buy from him. I had tried other dealers before, but they all wanted solid referrences with a history of buying, which I did not have. But this time the Dealer called up the guy who gave me my start and with a little over a year of buying faithfully from him, his reference was good enough for this other Dealer to accept me as a client.
Once I was able to buy from other dealers, I started to be able to buy at better prices. This is because I could now pick and choose the dealers I wanted to buy from instead of having to go to the only one who would sell to me. Things started to happen really fast then. It was around this time that I met Cristy Becker, a GIA Diamonds Graduate. She had gone to school at The Prestigious Gemological Institute of America to be certified to grade Diamonds. With Her knowledge of diamonds and my sales ability, it was a match made in heaven.
We started a retail jewelry business Called Jewelry By Shea, Inc. Shea is her middle name. Cristy had always wanted to Design her own jewelry and I was on a quest to buy diamonds cheaper every day. So we started manufacturing Fine Diamond Jewelry. We started this originally just to satisfy our retail customers demand for jewelry but we made beautiful high quality jewelry and other jewelers started asking us to make pieces for them. So we did.
Once we had a growing database of Jewelers we were selling our manufactured Diamond jewelry to, It became obvious to me that I could sell them Loose diamonds too. I figured, even if I did not make much money on those sales, It would at least increase our diamond buying volume which would in turn increase our buying power and lower our costs. And it did, alot. We needed Diamonds for our retail loose diamond sales, for the manufacturing of our jewelry and for the wholesale loose dimaond sales to the other jewelers.
With all this demand for loose diamonds, we decided to go enter the Diamond Importing and Dealing arena, so I started JBS Diamonds, Inc. After a few years JBS became a leader in Wholesale Diamond Sales in the US and was growing every day. This was about the time when Cristy expressed to me that she did not care for the hectic lifestyle of a wholesaler. She just enjoyed designing Diamond Rings, Semi Mounts and other Fine Diamond Jewelry. So, we split apart and she retained the private label designer name Jewelry By Shea. JBS Diamonds, became Chicago Diamonds, Inc. and is still a growing leader in the Diamond Industry doing much more volume than it ever has.
Chicago Diamonds, Inc. supplies Large Chain Jewelry Stores and many, many independant mom and pop stores as well as supplying the diamonds to many finished jewelry manufacturers including Jewelry By Shea, Inc. Chicago Diamonds, Inc also supplies to many wholesale diamond dealers and wholesalers who buy the diamonds to sell to their jeweler customers. The way this industry works, the diamond may pass through many dealers before arriving at the jewelry store. I have worked very hard to insure that the diamonds our customers buy take as direct of a path as possible from DeBeers to The Jeweler.
Chicago Diamonds, Inc. has now opened a subsidiary locaion on Chicago's Jewelers Row in he Jewelers Center Building on the second Floor called Diamonds Chicago. Diamonds Chicago will sell diamonds and fine jewelry directly to the public. This Retail Location has been dominating the Chicago Jewelry market for many years now.
I cannot believe how hard it was and how long it took to get my foot in the door. Equally as unbeleivable is how quickly things happened once I was in the door. Since then, I have helped hundreds of people get their foot in the door to become jewelers. I have also helped many people become Wholesale Diamond Dealers.
I love to help people to get into this business because they are one more potential customer for me and because, I love the Jewelry industry. It has been so good to me after as hard as it was to get in. It was worth the effort. It was just luck that I got in when I did. To be honest, I don't think that in todays economy, my success could be replicated. At least not without help from a Powerhouse Diamond Supplier like Chicago Diamonds, Inc. on your side.
